Coat of quality ... Hempel paints

Fake paints on the market pose no threat to Hempel because the company does not use plastic packaging which, unlike metal drums, are at particular risk to this problem, says marketing manager Colin Harris.

''There has been comment recently regarding the alleged practice of refilling used drums of well-known paint manufacturers with fake paints.,'' comments Harris. ''It has also been claimed that this practice affects some of the leading top brands, with Saudi Arabia being the most affected region.''

He continues: "We would like to point out that this is not a problem that has affected Hempel Paints. It is our belief that this problem applies to those companies using easily resealable plastic packaging. This type of packaging is particularly susceptible to refilling with fake paints as it is very difficult to determine whether or not the pack has been opened previously.

"Indeed, it is one of the reasons why Hempel took the decision not to use plastic packaging.''

"Hempel,'' he says, ''is firmly of the opinion that protecting the integrity of the brand and ensuring customers receive a quality product is of paramount importance - plastic packaging was, therefore, considered an unnecessary risk. At Hempel, we feel it is important to correct any misunderstandings that may have been created."
