More than 100 German companies will display their products and services at this month's Big 5 show in Dubai.

The companies, representing various sectors such as mechanical engineering, water supply and distribution and building industry, will be part of the official German pavilion sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.

It will be one of the largest national pavilions at the region's premier construction and contracting exhibition, says VDMA - the German Engineering Federation.

The German pavilion in hall 2 will be the location for regional visitors to meet exhibitors and to inform themselves about new products and trends both in the area of durable producer and consumer goods.

The strong presence of German companies is also reflected in the figures, says VDMA: Trade relations between the UAE and Germany have grown continuously. In 2001, Germany's overall exports increased by 34 per cent to 2,882 million euro ($2,830 million).

Capital goods in terms of mechanical engineering account for nearly 20 per cent or 533 million euro of this general export stream from Germany to the UAE. As a consumer market, the UAE is almost as important as Saudi Arabia. These figures are even higher taking the plant construction manufacturers into account.

For large industrial plant makers, the UAE was the most important country in the region with an order volume of 800 million euro, a sharp increase from 500 million euro in 2000, mainly attributable to large projects in the power generation sector.

As a consequence, power systems rank on top of the list of the overall German mechanical engineering exports to the region, followed by construction equipment and building materials machinery and valves for domestic and industrial appliances.
