Allround ... the scaffolding system being used on the bridge.

Layher recently played an innovative support role to a major bridge under construction over the Rhine in Germany.

"The new bridge over the river Rhine is being built at Ilverich," says a company spokesman.

He continues: For the project, two support towers on the bridge were fitted with Layher's Allround scaffolding to execute corrosion protection works.

"The construction of the highway bridge near the airport in Duesseldorf starts from both banks at the same time. It is an impressive bridge construction with diagonal guys and two prominent 34m-high support towers, giving the impression of inverted triangles. A 6-m minimum headroom through the towers on the highway had to be kept free for transportation of the bridge elements.

"The Allround scaffolding was suspended from the top of the towers. All working areas were close-boarded. The geometry of the towers was such that only 38.5 tonnes of Allround material had to be used as the scaffold construction was staggered. For this project, the advantages of the Allround system came to the fore. Its high speed of erection - thanks to the elimination of fitting wedge lock connections - as well as the flexible angle selections and a wide range of accessories, meant that the project managers' requirements were fulfilled."
