The Big 5

Legacy of luxury

Weather Shield ... upmarket products.

Weather Shield Windows and Doors of the US will be showing off its upmarket Legacy series of doors and windows among other product lines at the Big 5 show.

Both the Legacy windows as well as the hinged and patio doors - with French and swinging patio doors - have been designed especially for custom and luxury homes.

"Designed for increased performance and beauty, the doors feature adjustable 4-inch hinges - exclusive to Weather Shield - that match handle-set finishes and allow for precise door height adjustments," says communications manager Jeff Williams.

He continues: "The heavy-duty, 2-1/4-inch-thick door panels feature a solid wood core with strong extruded aluminum exteriors. A factory-installed, German-engineered three-point locking system is provided on all doors for increased performance and trouble-free operation.

''The hinged and patio doors are ideally suited for the special needs of custom homes," says marketing director and product specialist Bob Eckert. "The doors are available in a variety of multiple widths, up to 3-ft 6-inches (single and double) with door heights up to 10 ft. Homeowners may choose from 7-1/2-inch, 10-inch and 12-inch tall bottom rails."

Other choices in the Legacy door system include:

  • Four standard and seven Flexicolor exterior finishes.

  • ÊSix interior wood finishes, including oak, maple, mahogany, pine, American fir and cherry, from Weather Shield's Custom Wood Interiors Collection.

  • A traditional style handle-set or a more contemporary style handle-set.

  • Elegant finishing touches of perimeter grilles, airspace grilles, simulated divided lite grilles or true divided lites.

  • Coordinating half-circle or elliptical transoms;

  • Decorative doorlight glass designs.

    "All the doors feature dual-pane insulated ThermoGold low-E glass as standard, which contains real gold particles that help a home stay cooler in the summer," says Williams. "Other features that make Legacy doors stand out include a three-point contact weather stripping that ensures a weather-tight seal and fixed, aluminum threshold. The threshold features a vinyl thermal break along with an internal weep system that channels water away from the interior of the home."

    The Legacy aluminium-clad wood windows are constructed with improved sightlines, high resistance to strong weather and extra sash and frame thickness for higher performance, says Williams.

    The line also has ThermoGold Low E glass as a standard glazing option in all tilt double-hung, casement and direct-set windows.

    "The Legacy Series windows are warranted for 20 years on the frame and sash of the windows," says Williams. "The tilt double-hungs have 35 per cent more mass and in lab tests Legacy casements withstood winds of up to 205 mph. The sturdy windows feature corner key construction and overlapping mull covers so that homeowners have cleaner sightlines and better resistance to all types of weather."

    Options in the window line include Flexicolor exteriors, hardwood interiors, true divided lite and a variety of glazings including Argon and Argon/Krypton injection into the airspace of the glass.
