The Big 5

Key support role

The Construction Products Association of the UK, which actively promotes British exports to the Middle East, will be playing a key role at this year's Big 5 show.

The association is sponsoring a group of UK companies at the Big 5 for the first time.

The Building Exhibition Management (BEM) is organising and coordinating the UK participation at the event on behalf of the association, as is the norm for overseas fairs.

"The UK's construction products industry has an annual turnover of £24 billion and accounts for 40 per cent of total construction output and 80 per cent of the stock market value of the whole construction industry," says Joy Heatley, a spokeswoman for the BEM. "Almost £4 billion of the industry's products are exported each year."

She continues: "The industry offers a diverse line of products ranging from aggregates to sophisticated mechanical and electrical equipment that control the Internal environment of our buildings. Companies within the sector also range from large global operators to small local enterprises manufacturing specialist products.

"Therefore the role of the Construction Products Association is to act as an umbrella body across these sectors and to ensure that the industry speaks with a single and effective voice on all issues of common interest."

The focus of the association's activities, according to Heatley, is to help the industry become more competitive and more profitable. It can most effectively achieve this, she says, by

  • Ensuring that the regulatory/legislative framework within which its companies operate is conducive to improving competitiveness;

  • Providing up-to-date economic information about the performance of the industry and its future prospects; influencing the policies and proposals of those in government and the European Commission; and

  • Identifying ways in which the industry can improve its performance.

    The association's group in Hall 5 will display a broad range of products and services for which the UK is renowned, including measurement and control systems (currently being utilised in the Dubai Marina project), architectural stonework and landscape ornaments, sharpening tools, structural waterproofing and strengthening, protective coatings as well as various bathroom products in the ceramics and bathrooms hall.

    The following are the companies within the group: Command Alkon (measurement and control systems), Global Group (bathroom and sanitary fittings and plumbing supplies), Haddonstone (architectural and ornamental stonework), John Guest (push-fit plumbing and heating systems), Langdon (European) (Unisharp sharpening systems and tools), Metsec (cold-rolled products), Multikwik (kitchen and bathroom accessories), Precision Products (Eurotool multipurpose tool), Process Systems (electronic water quality measurement and control systems), Quickseal Specialist Contractors (water-

    proofing), Steelfields (concrete batching plant and mixers), T M Products (water industry), Torday & Carlisle (protective coatings) and Trade Winds (ventilation equipment).

    The association will also have an information stand in Hall 5.
