Stanley Security Solutions Middle East, headquartered in Dubai, aims to enhance its presence in the region’s security and access control systems market with the introduction of its Precision Hardware D-4990 low-energy power operator, for building entrances and automatic door applications.
Precision Hardware is a business unit of Stanley Security Solutions, a leading US-based provider of integrated access control and security solutions for institutional, commercial and industrial businesses and organisations. The D-4990, says the company, provides users a flexible access control product that ensures safety, security and easy accessibility for all users.
“The Precision Hardware D-4990 low-energy power operator gives facilities the best of both worlds – Stanley Security Solutions’ extensive automatic operator technologies as well as the dependable performance found in all Stanley products,” says Robert Keil, vice president and managing director, Stanley Security Solutions Middle East. Commenting on the technical advances made in this field and the need for low-energy power operators for automatic doors, a company spokesperson says: “While not new to the marketplace, power operators for building entrances and automatic door applications have realised tremendous technological advancement in recent years that simplify installation and integration with other building and access control systems.
Power operators fall under two primary classifications – full-energy and low-energy. However, according to him, although owners, architects and hardware specifiers are required to install products assisting with ingress and egress, local building codes generally do not require installation of a low-energy power operator for automatic doors.
Full-energy operators are typically used in commercial/retail applications where the goal is to move people through the door quickly so that traffic flow is unimpeded by the action of the door.
“On the other hand,” says the spokesperson, “low-energy operators, such as the Precision Hardware D-4990, are designed to open and close the automatic door slowly, providing the user – particularly the physically impaired – adequate time to negotiate their entry or exit. Low-energy operators move doors at a rate considered intrinsically safe, since the kinetic energy generated by the movement of the door should be lower than that which could injure the average person on impact. Low-energy operators typically do not require any additional safety systems.”
The D-4990 low-energy power operator provides high flexibility for a variety of accessibility applications, incorporating in its design the proven technology of a Stanley motorised door opener with the reliable mechanical performance of Stanley’s D-4550 heavy-duty door closer, he says.
While other low-energy operators provide continued manual operation of the door when electric power is lost, the Precision Hardware D-4990 allows the door closer to function fully independent of the motor. As a result, the typical excessive push or pull force found in some power operators has been eliminated in the D-4990, he points out.
Highlighting a unique feature of the operator, the spokesperson continues: “Strength is the defining characteristic of the D-4990, which is the only low-energy operator in the industry rated for service on doors weighing up to 350 pounds, capably accommodating a high wind or heavy load during the opening or closing cycle. Some manufacturers do not indicate any rating for weight capacity, while other manufacturers’ door operators are rated at 200 or 250 pounds.”
The D-4990 may be used with electric latch retraction exit devices, electric strikes, and other electric locking systems. A time-delay function is built into the control system, eliminating the need for supplemental relays or controls.
“The D-4990 is a ‘Power Open’ operator that can be activated with the press of a switch and virtually any form of “knowing act” can be used to initiate the operator, making integration with existing systems easier.
“After receiving an activation signal, the D-4990 will power open the door from the closed position, and the hold-open timer will hold the door in the open position for up to 28 seconds. In addition, a ‘hold-open’ switch is provided to hold the door open for extended periods,” the spokesman explains.
In addition to a variety of electronic actuators, the D-4990 offers a wide range of other available features to meet the specific needs of commercial facilities:
• Access control compatibility with exit devices, electric strikes and electromagnetic locks;
• An auto-open sequence compatible with any form of switch;
• Electronic sequencing to control the opening of two doors within a vestibule;
• A push-and-go option in which a field-selectable switch initiates the automatic opening sequence during manual operation;
• A hold-open timer can keep doors open up to 28 seconds after signal activation;
An external function switch providing three modes of operation: “Day” or automatic mode; “Night” manual or secure mode; or “Hold-Open”, which holds the door open indefinitely;
• The obstruction detection function monitors the door opening and stalls the door when an obstruction is encountered, reducing the risk of personal injury and/or damage to the surrounding structure;
• The power-close option can accommodate door openings requiring additional closing force to overcome interior stack pressures, weather stripping and wind conditions that do not allow the door to close properly;
• An internal cycle counter to be equipped with two internal independent cycle counters that provide data on manual and powered operations.
