Concrete success

Saudi Readymix Concrete Company, a leading producer and supplier of ready-mixed concrete and related products in Saudi Arabia, recently reached a major milestone on the mega Petro-Rabigh project in the Red Sea city of Rabigh in western Saudi Arabia.

By January this year, the company had successfully delivered 250,000 cu m of concrete, representing more than 75 per cent of the total concrete required for the project.
Some 230,000 cu m were supplied in 2006 alone, when Saudi Readymix had successfully secured contracts with eight of the 12 contractors working on the project prior to its launch.
Rabigh Refining and Petrochemical Company, or Petro-Rabigh, is a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and the Japanese Sumitomo Chemical Company. The project, co-managed by the two companies, will be one of the largest integrated refining and petrochemical complexes ever built at one time.
To meet the large quantities of concrete such a project requires, Saudi Readymix set up a dedicated on-site station to support its existing station in Rabigh. Each station contains two batching plants with a production capacity of 400 cu m per hour and 35,000 cu m per month.
Commenting on the achievement, Fadi Mujahed, marketing director for Saudi Readymix, says: “We are delighted to have been chosen to play such a large part in the construction of Petro-Rabigh which, through its contribution to the region’s industrial development and diversification, is one of the most important and anticipated mega projects under way in the kingdom.”
“By securing contracts with the majority of contractors working on the Petro-Rabigh project, we agreed to supply the bulk of the project’s concrete requirements. This is a testament to the industry’s confidence in our ability to guarantee the supply of quality concrete to a large-scale and highly demanding project such as this, thereby ensuring that all deadlines are met,” adds Bader Hussein, Saudi Readymix’s regional manager for the Western Region.
Petro-Rabigh is rated as one of the kingdom’s high-profile projects.
“Working on a project such as Petro-Rabigh enables us to demonstrate the high level of expertise that has placed us in a position of such leadership in this increasingly competitive market,” says Mujahed.
As a market leader in the concrete industry, Saudi Readymix is in the midst of unprecedented growth, largely due to the construction drive in Saudi Arabia and the wider Middle East Region. The company plans to extend its operations across the entire kingdom, especially in the Northern and Southern provinces, by opening new plants and expanding and modernising its current fleet.
The company last month launched a campus recruitment drive to attract local talent. The major recruitment road show included visits to King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), King Faisal University (KFU), King Saud University (KSU) and King Abdul Aziz University (KAAU).
Company president Rami Khalid Alturki comments: “To keep pace with the surge in demand in the booming construction industry, we are implementing an aggressive growth plan in all areas of our operation. To support this internally, we have implemented this graduate recruitment programme to supply us with a steady stream of talented and ambitious young Saudis, who will help us realise our goals. By the end of this year for example, we aim to grow our current workforce from 1,700 employees to almost 2,100. Those graduates who choose to work with Saudi Readymix will enjoy an excellent working environment with an opportunity for hands-on learning from some of the most respected industry experts in the kingdom.”
Human resources and administration director, Salem Al Hajri comments: “We have a very progressive philosophy regarding the training and education of our employees aimed at raising the standards of our company and the industry as a whole. To achieve this goal, we spare no effort in developing our employees through internal and internationally accredited programmes such as the Concrete Technologist City and Guilds certificate of London Institute (CGLI) in the UK. We strive to provide a bright future with us and a clear career path for all our people that goes hand-in-hand with competitive remuneration packages, employee benefits, and transparency in policies and procedures.”
