A new general contracting company has been formed by a number of forward-focused local contractors who have pooled their experience and resources to meet the present and future demands of the region.
The new Saudi-based entity, Gulf Consolidated Contractors Company (GCC), is already looking at expanding its services – both in content and geographical location – as well as forging new acquisitions and partnerships depending upon targeted project requirements.
“With the general contracting industry throughout the Gulf and particularly in Saudi Arabia, facing an unprecedented boom with mega projects abounding in all fields, requiring the services of suitably qualified contractors, the local contracting industry has not been able to respond effectively to the degree required,” says a spokesman for the Dammam-based GCC. “In view of these circumstances, several forward looking local contracting entities agreed to pool their experience and resources with a view to forming a general contracting company with the ability to meet the present and future demands in the region for a strong locally-based company. This led to the formation of GCC, which has the benefit of local knowledge and experience together with a powerful history of construction over 50 years or so and a strong focus towards the future.”
The constituent companies of GCC include Fafco-Petcon (Abdullah Fouad) and the construction arm of Abdullah H Al Shuwayer and Al Tamimi company as well as Al Jabr Trading, Collectively, this group has experience in the full spectrum of the industrial construction market, including all aspects of building, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation disciplines as well as a strong background in the specialist pipeline and steel fabrication fields, the spokesman points out.
Much of this extensive regional experience has been built serving some major local clients such as Saudi Aramco, the national oil company and the largest oil corporation in the world. Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), the national electrical energy supplier and Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic), currently one of the largest global producers of petrochemicals.
The constituent companies of GCC all have high quality standards as they are ISO 9001:2000, certified as well as the ASME certificates of authorisation for code stamps and the National Board where appropriate.
“The objective of this merger is to primarily harness the varied attributes of the main companies involved, in order to build a general contracting company with a well diversified capability and of sufficient stature and experience to be able to undertake the scale and scope of the large industrial plant and related construction projects currently planned ire the region and beyond,” says spokesperson.
Under one unified umbrella, GCC operates as three divisions within Saudi Arabia – GCC Plant Construction, GCC Pipeline Construction and GCC Transport and Equipment Rental, “although we anticipate considerable interplay between the divisions in order to cater to targeted projects. Through these divisions, we are targeting the larger multi-discipline industrial projects that are being currently planned both in Saudi Arabia and across the Gulf,” he adds.
GCC, through its constituent companies, has a combined workforce of approximately 4,500 – including a new block visa allocation – as well as a considerable plant fleet available in the kingdom. The company is at present upgrading and assessing all its existing plant in order to stabilise its current assets and is also reviewing its future plant investment strategy.
“A number of projects, sufficient to employ the bulk of our workforce, are currently in hand, most of them for of Saudi Aramco – both direct or indirect – covering the major disciplines of civil, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation (E&I), fabrication works and pipelines,” says a company spokesperson.
“With the official announcement of the launch of our new merger company and the recent receipt of a Saudi Aramco vendor number, we shall soon commence bidding in the name of GCC. Following the launch of our company in September last year, we intend to formalize all outstanding matters urgently,” he adds.
GCC is a registered company in Saudi Arabia with its own CRC Number and has recently moved into its new premises on the eighth floor at the Eastern Cement Tower Building, A1 Khobar, located on the Al Khobar Dammam Highway. Both construction divisions are temporarily housed in the former Fafco/Petcon Dammam office complex with its transport and equipment rental division in the former Tamimi laydown yard offices. As part of its expansion strategy, the company is planning a new laydown yard with full supporting facilities, construction of which will start soon.
