On a record high

Putzmeister ... reaching new heights at the Burj Dubai.

Having created headlines recently when one of its pumps transported 80 cu m of concrete up to a height of 550 m in about three hours, German construction equipment specialist Putzmeister is set to steal the show at the Big 5 with its high-performance equipment, which have already earned a reputation on numerous projects in the region.

The record was set in mid-September this year by a stationary Putzmeister super high-pressure concrete pump pumped concrete up to level 150 of the Burj Dubai, which now stands as the tallest building in the world. The super high-pressure concrete pump BSA 14000 SHP-D that set this record is currently pumping further upwards to help the Burj Dubai reach a height that is still to be revealed.
A similar stationary concrete pump will be exhibited during the Big 5 show at the Putzmeister booth.
“All high-rise concrete pumping and placing at the Burj Dubai project is covered by Putzmeister equipment,” a spokesman for Putzmeister points out.
In addition to high-rise concrete pumping, another challenge is conveying concrete over long distances, the spokesman points out.
“Who else can pump concrete over more than 2,000 m distance? Putzmeister stationary concrete pumps and booms bring the concrete to wherever it’s needed. And they continue to set records for height and reach,” he says.
Putzmeister offers a wide range of stationary Putzmeister concrete pumps: from compact units used for shotcreting or to make work on small construction sites more efficient, to the high-performance BSA 14000 series of compact trailer concrete pumps with an output of 200 cu m per hour with concrete pressures of far more than 300 bar. Additional horsepower and sound advice are available for large projects, if needed.
The spokesman continues: “Putzmeister is synonymous with effective problem solving anywhere that concrete and other media need pumping, delivering, placing or distributing. Concrete pumps and concrete placing booms, tunnelling machinery, mortar pumps and high-pressure cleaners are the main products of the company. With top equipment quality, sound advice, services and tailor-made solutions.
Putzmeister is a well-respected partner in the following markets: Construction; mining and tunnelling; and power stations, effluent treatment plants and refuse incineration facilities. At the Big 5 show the company is mainly focusing on the construction industry with concrete pumping and placing equipment.
Truck-mounted concrete pumps
Apart from stationary pumps, Putzmeister offers a wide range of truck-mounted concrete pumps.
“There’s one for every kind of application, with concrete placing booms from 16 m to 63 m vertical reach. Output up to 200 cu m per hour and concrete pressures up to 130 bar are possible with Putzmeister truck-mounted concrete pumps. To make the truck pumps more flexible on the job site, Putzmeister offers the concrete placing booms with four, five or even six-arm segments,” the spokesman says.
“Whether underground or high-rise, at small sites or on large projects — with their powerful pumping units, Putzmeister truck-mounted concrete pumps are the preferred option on construction sites throughout the world and especially in the Arab countries. They are the ideal solution under most extreme conditions, having been often over a decade in use,” he adds.

Technical innovations
Turning to the technical innovations developed by the company to make the placing of concrete even easier, the spokesman says: “‘Mechydronic’ is the term for the ultimate combination of mechanical, hydraulic and electronic systems. Putzmeister’s years of experience in these areas have enabled the company to develop the innovative Ergonic Boom Control (EBC), a computer-based system for controlling concrete placing booms. As a result, the pump operator has an easier job and can service the construction site more effectively. The boom arms are moved using an infinitely variable, remote-control joy-stick. The boom and end hose moves smoothly, thanks to EBC. This is a decided advantage for high output.
“EBC means more all-round comfort, safety and cost savings because of the high productivity of the concrete pump. All in all, it’s a Putzmeister innovation that sets standards in the industry.”
Following on from EBC, there are further Ergonic modules that facilitate day-to-day work on the concrete pump and make its operation more efficient.
“The Ergonic Output Control (EOC), for example, maintains the engine’s speed of rotation at an efficient rate, while Ergonic Pump System (EPS) undertakes the control of the concrete pump and ensures an optimised pumping process,” he says.
Putzmeister was established in 1958 by Karl Schlecht as KS-Maschinenbau for building plastering machines. In 1963, it acquired the name Putzmeister which stands for plastering master. Today, the construction equipment giant has earned a worldwide reputation as a specialist in developing, manufacturing and marketing machines not only for pumping and distributing concrete, mortar and high-density solids but also for preparing, temporarily storing and processing these materials, as well as high-pressure cleaning systems.  Its machines are used in diverse application including civil engineering, mining and tunnelling as well as large-scale industrial projects and power stations.
Supported by a worldwide network of offices and subsidiaries that ensures the optimum care for all its customers, the company also provides comprehensive advice and support, from the right choice of machine for the job through to its commissioning, including engineering development.
