DeWalt, a leading manufacturer of powerful industrial tools, has launched a new line of heavy-duty small-angle grinders (SAGs), which, according to the company, boasts a host of innovative features.
“The new small angle grinders redefine durability, allowing them to endure the most brutal work environments,” says Kari Vikman, marketing manager, Middle East and Africa.
The range of heavy-duty SAGs – which include the D28130, D28132 and the D28136 – is ideal for metal fabricators, welders, steam fitters, sprinkler fitters, pipe fitters, shipbuilders, commercial contractors, forming contractors, residential contractors and farmers.
“These high-powered SAGs have the ability to cut and grind many materials including steel, pipe, tile, block, concrete and mortar,” says Vikman.
In addition to the enhanced grinding ability, the grinders also come equipped with a dust ejection system, which increases machine durability. By ejecting dust particles and debris that enter the tool through the air-intake vents, the new system reduces the occurrence of debris damaging the motor. The dust port of the grinder facilitates the ejection of 70 per cent of concrete dust and debris and 80 per cent of metal dust and debris, he says.
“DeWalt has also created a one-piece brush arm that dramatically reduces risk of the brushes getting jammed or hung up. This design increases productivity by eliminating jamming or hang-up of brushes by ensuring constant brush contact with the commutator. The angle grinders are equipped with pop-off brushes that automatically shut off the tool when the brushes need to be replaced. This mechanism helps increase the longevity of the motor since it prevents users from operating the tool on worn brushes,” he adds.
For further protection, a heavy-duty epoxy coating protects the copper in the motor against dust and debris abrasion. The new range of SAGs have an armature debris deflector that covers the armature windings and the deflector spins at 30,000 rpms, deflecting dust and debris away from the motor and allowing it to exit through the exhaust vents.
“For increased durability, all units have been made with a jam-pot gear case - an industry first on a grinder - providing precise gear alignment while reducing gear noise and vibration,” says Vikman. “The jam-pot gear case presses the drive gear and spindle into a solid cast aluminium housing that does not flex or give way under extreme pressure. The grinders are also designed with spiral bevel gears, which provide users with increased durability as well as a smoother and quieter transmission that reduces vibration.”
Additionally, the new jam-pot gear case gives all three grinders the lowest profile gear case in the industry, providing the user with greater cutting depth and the ability to fit the tool into tight spaces.
Elaborating on the grinder, he says: “In order to increase power without creating a longer motor, the new SAGs feature a four-piece G55 motor, whose design employs next-generation coil winding processes, allowing more copper to be housed in the motor. Such a process has helped the development of grinders, which are not just the smallest in their class but also pack the most power. The motor has 50 per cent more copper than standard motors, providing increased power and a high-level of overload protection. Using this latest motor technology, the D28136 and D28137 SAGs give a maximum input power of 1,500W.
“A key feature of the SAGs is the high power-to-size ratio. A small girth of 185 mm and length of 260 mm ensures the user maximum comfort in use.
“For increased ease of use, the new units are equipped with an anti-lock flange, which prevents flanges from permanently locking up and locking the disc on. The grinders also have a side located oversized spindle lock button, which is easier to depress and hold during wheel changes. Because it is positioned on the side, the spindle has more protection when using the grinder in confined spaces. Additionally, the SAGs are equipped with a lever action keyless-guard with large steel hinges and adjustable tension screw, as well as a two-position vibration reducing side handle that adds comfort during periods of extended grinding and cutting.”
All SAGs also benefit from an anti-vibration side handle, which increases user comfort. In addition, the D28137 and D28117 have the added advantage of having an auto balance feature, which reduces vibration further, he adds.
Standard equipment includes a protective keyless guard, multi-positioned anti-vibration side handle, inner and outer disc flanges and a spanner.
The SAG is a new breed of tools that has been developed in keeping with DeWalt’s focus on the needs of the professional power tool user. It is this focus that has enabled the company to quickly become one of the world’s leading manufacturers of industrial power tools, says Vikman, who is eyeing the Big 5 show to boost his business contacts in the region.
“The construction industry is rapidly expanding throughout the Gulf and exhibitions such as the Big 5 provide an ideal networking platform to harness the market potential in the Middle East. The Big 5 also offers a good opportunity to learn more about what other markets have to offer and to meet and trade with people from all over the world.” says Vikman.
“We are hoping to generate business contacts in the Middle East and play a greater role in the development of the region,” he adds.
