Saudi-based Guardian Industries Company Limited (GICL) says its range of road blockers and Shark Jaw barriers are a secure choice for safety and security applications.

GICL has more than 25 years expertise in the manufacture, installation and maintenance of security roadblocks and it provides clients high-level guidance and specialised engineering consultations service prior to sale.

Road blockers
“Designed and manufactured to suit the extreme climatic conditions of the Middle East, the GB line of road blockers is available in a wide range of series and impact ratings. The range includes units for cost-effective parking control applications, and for high security military sites, embassies, residential compounds, and offices, among others,” says a company spokesman.
“Guardian designs, manufactures, installs and maintains access controls systems that assist users in guiding personnel and traffic ‘in and out’ of secure area for situations where it is imperative that unauthorised vehicles are stopped,” says the spokesman.
“GICL systems offer a host of advantages,” he says. “Since we are local manufacturers, the spares are available at all times. In addition, the company can also offer quick support in case of breakdown. Also, the combination of design, manufacture, installation and after-sales service under one roof provides very cost-effective solutions for our customers.”
“To ensure that we meet the exact needs of our customers, GICL conducts a comprehensive site visit to assess each individual location. Based on the findings of this visit, we are able to recommend to our clients the most appropriate and cost-effective means of providing security to their premises. All our designs are tested and approved by authorised agencies for impact and crash ratings.’’
The GB series of road blockers from GICL has the following features:
• Massive RHS steel static and rising impact frames, continuously welded seams for maximum strength;
• Standard raised heights of 350 to 600 mm and 1,000 mm or custom designed;
• Range of available widths 1,500 to 6,000 mm or custom designed;
• Units are approved for axle load capacities from 30 to 50 tonnes and can be hydraulically or pneumatically operated depending on customer requirements and specification;
• The top base sections are hinged together so that the top section can be raised to form a physical barrier;
• The hinges are made of high quality axle steel;
• Top plates are manufactured from 8/10 mm checker plates;
• The main structure of the blocking element is of UNP 140/HEA/120;
• The road blocker unit is located almost flush into the road surface (25 mm above);
• Standard raising/lowering times of two to five seconds in accordance with customer requirements;
• Designed to withstand repeated impact within the capacity of the blocker; and
• The equipment is factory shot blasted and finished with two-component zinc epoxy primer and matt-black paint with diagonal yellow strips. Galvanised blockers are available on request.
The company can offer power supply as per site requirements. In addition, it offers general power failure operations such as a manual hand pump or battery back-up (at additional cost) for hydraulic road blockers. For pneumatic road blockers, it offers the option of providing stored compressed air.
The range also features several options that include: Card readers, loop detectors for automatic operation of blockers, remote operation, interfacing with existing or new access control systems and boom barriers.

Shark Jaw barriers
Designed to provide to protection against unauthorised traffic moving through a gate, the barriers provide protection to installations by preventing vehicles attempting to cross the row of steel spikes, from either direction. The high-tensile steel barriers – which remain intact even after impact – seek to disable the vehicles by destroying their tyres including the wheel disc.
The barrier has a jaw size of 310 mm by 25mm and has a lifting time of less than five seconds. Its lowering time can be adjusted to between two and five seconds. The shark jaw can withstand a dynamic impact of 20 tonnes at 100 kmphm with a maximum axle load of 300 kN. The jaw, which can work both hydraulically as well as pneumatically, comes factory shot blasted and coated with two coats of zinc epoxy primer, matt-black epoxy paint finish with red spikes. The Shark Jaws are installed in special precast concrete flushed to the ground.
A standard Shark Jaw has the following accessories: push buttons, traffic light, safety vehicle induction loop, submersible pump for drainage, and shade for hydraulic power pack/compressor.
Established in 1978, Guardian was formerly known as Saudi Metal Industries, and was initially involved only in the manufacture of wire mesh, says the spokesman. But the company has since expanded and diversified into chain-link fencing system, weld-mesh fencing system, access control system and roadblock systems. In 1989, Guardian became a wholly Saudi-based joint venture company with the Hamad Abdullah Zamil Group and the Yusuf bin Ahmed Kanoo Company as principal partners.
Guardian claims to be is the only manufacturer within Saudi Arabia with complete in-house production facilities and the first company to specialise in high-performance steel road blockers in co-operation with internationally licensed American and British specialists in the field of security blockers industry, manufacturing under licence from Broughton Controls UK and B&B Arm of the US.
“Our strength lies in our ability to offer quality after-sales service, which no other competitor can provide. We can cater to the needs of our clients with maintenance and support services in case of breakdown in major cities within 24 hours and other remote areas in 48 hours,” says the spokesman.
Its efforts at attaining world-class quality standards were crowned with its achievement of  ISO9001 certification.
“As a professional and experienced access control maintenance and service specialist, we always advocate that “Prevention is better than Cure” and offer a range of planned maintenance programmes for all our product range,” says the spokesman.
