Shaikh Rashid Terminal ... soft opening

Dubai has announced plans for the third terminal of the Dubai International Airport even as it opened its $540 million second terminal.

Work on a third terminal costing $650 million is scheduled to start in 2002, a year earlier than previously anticipated.

Shaikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman of Emirates and President of the Department of Civil Aviation, said the terminal will be bigger than the new Shaikh Rashid Terminal, which has just had a soft opening.

It will have 36 to 37 gates and would be identical in design to the Shaikh Rashid Terminal, he said.

The new, 148,000 sq m, five- level Shaikh Rashid Terminal incorporates the following features:

  • A departures level with 27 contact gates, 47 passenger loading bridges and spacious holding lounges for passengers;

  • A 100-room hotel on the upper two levels, offering high-quality accommodation, restaurants, health spa and swimming pool, as well as a fully-equipped business and conference centre;

  • Cafes, bars, snack bars, restaurants and an internet cafe;

  • 14 VIP/First/Business Class lounges;

  • The new Dubai Duty Free shopping complex. The state-of-the-art shopfloor sports spectacular design, visual effects and premium product ranges in every category;

  • A supervised dedicated waiting lounge for special needs passengers;

  • Fully equipped medical centre and first-aid emergency rooms throughout the airport; and

  • Children's play areas, money exchanges and postal services.

    Passenger and aircraft handling at the new concourse will be operated by Dnata Airport Operations.

    Dubai International Airport is considered the Middle East's premier and busiest airport. Even more dramatic growth is forecast for the next several years - as more multinational corporations recognise Dubai as a cost effective and strategically-located regional business hub.
