Dubai has announced plans for the third terminal of the Dubai International Airport even as it opened its $540 million second terminal.
Work on a third terminal costing $650 million is scheduled to start in 2002, a year earlier than previously anticipated.
Shaikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman of Emirates and President of the Department of Civil Aviation, said the terminal will be bigger than the new Shaikh Rashid Terminal, which has just had a soft opening.
It will have 36 to 37 gates and would be identical in design to the Shaikh Rashid Terminal, he said.
The new, 148,000 sq m, five- level Shaikh Rashid Terminal incorporates the following features:
Passenger and aircraft handling at the new concourse will be operated by Dnata Airport Operations.
Dubai International Airport is considered the Middle East's premier and busiest airport. Even more dramatic growth is forecast for the next several years - as more multinational corporations recognise Dubai as a cost effective and strategically-located regional business hub.
