Construction work on the Dh12.5 billion ($3.4 billion) Dubai Metro project is expected to start by the end of this month (February).
The work will begin at 35 sites simultaneously as logistics for the civil work, excavation and construction of viaducts are being finalised at these places, said Abdul Majeed Khaja, director of Dubai Metro (Dubai Light Rail Project) at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
He said the RTA has placed everything in order and is set to start the actual construction work. Allaying fears about traffic bottlenecks during the construction period, he said: “Our primary aim is to minimise the impact on traffic, residents and businesses. We have finalised plans on road diversions to cope with any traffic issue. Motorists will not face any congestion on any construction site,” he said.
Work on the Red Line is being carried out first, as planned, while that on the Green Line will start at the end of this year.
The Red Line, which will be constructed during Phase One, runs from Rashidiya Station to Jebel Ali Station and is 52.1 km long. The Green Line, which will be constructed during Phase Two, is 17.6 km long. It runs from Dubai Airport Free Zone to Dubai Healthcare City.
