
Dubai Sports City (DSC) – claimed to be the world’s first purpose-built, integrated city themed on sports and a cornerstone project of Dubailand – has awarded Wade Adams Contracting a contract worth more than Dh400 million ($109 million) to build the infrastructure for the 50 million sq ft DSC project which includes Victory Heights, a private residential gated golf community.
The contract covers the installation 50 km of roads, 70.5 km of potable water piping, 120 km of telecommunications multiple ducts, 54 km of sewerage mains, 29 km of storm water drainage, 87 km of electrical cable and 41.5 km of irrigation ducts.
During the period of the contract over 1500 workers are expected to be on site.
Upon signing the contract, Khalid Al Zarooni, president of DSC, said: “This is a significant contract, one of the largest ever-awarded by a private sector company in Dubai’s economy, which reflects the magnitude and scope of the Dubai Sports City development. We appointed Wade Adams as the key contractor for a number of reasons – not only do they boast an impressive and successful track record, having worked on a number of prestigious developments in the Middle East – but they also work to the highest standards of efficiency, quality and safety. It is essential that we work with the best of breed in every respect from the start in order to ensure a strong foundation for the future.”
The development will be centred around four magnificent stadia:
• A 60,000 capacity multi-purpose outdoor stadium for football, rugby, track and field and other sports and non-sports events;
• A 10,000-seat multi-purpose indoor arena suitable for all hard court sports as well as concerts and other events. It also includes a removable ice rink;
• A 25,000-capacity dedicated cricket stadium; and
• A 10,000-seat field hockey stadium.
Located on the upper west side of Dubailand, the DSC development will also include the construction of: training academies; an 18-hole championship golf course and residential complex; a dedicated sports free zone – track fields for running and bicycle competitions, shopping malls, cinemas and stores, medical clinic and other services; and hotel facilities. Further announcements are expected on the establishment of an international cricket academy and a golf residential development.
Khatib and Alami of Lebanon is the consultant for the road and infrastructure works and Electrowatt-Ekono of Switzerland is the power distribution network consultant.
Germany’s Von Gerkan, Marg & Partner (GMP) is the designer for the Dh2.7 billion ($759.6 million) schemes for DSC's four stadiums. US’ Parsons International has been appointed project management consultant (PMC) on the DSC development and Clifton Coney Group of Australia is the project manager for the stadiums.
