Italy’s Tecnimont and Korea’s Daewoo Engineering & Construction have together won a $816 million contract to build a new petrochemical facility from Q-Chem in Qatar.

The Q-Chem II derivatives facility, to be completed by the end of 2008, will produce 350,000 tonnes of high density polyethylene per year, as well as normal alpha olefin, used in the manufacture of cleaning agents. Moreover, the plants will contribute to the production of some offsite components.
The plant will be one of the largest in the Gulf and it will be built in Mesaieed for Q-Chem, a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum and Chevron Phillips Chemical.
Tecnimont will operate as the main company of the consortium founded and will manage the planning, supply of materials and supervision of the construction, while Daewoo Engineering will focus on construction only.
Tecnimont’s CEO Fady Khallouf comments: ‘‘Q-Chem is the first order signed by Tecnimont in Qatar and it represents a strategic project to develop our activities in this country and in the whole Middle East. This project also indicates the beginning of an important partnership with Chevron Phillips Chemical, a company that will grow significantly in this area, in the next years.”
