The Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry (QCCI) plans to build a city to house low-income expatriates, on the outskirts of Doha, in a bid to combat spiralling rents in the capital.
Rents for families and single workers allotted housing units in the city are to be fixed in accordance with their monthly income. A huge plot of land has already been earmarked for the purpose near the industrial area, and the chamber plans to invite private real estate companies to build the project.
A number of real estate firms are said to have expressed eagerness to take part in the massive construction project.
The city would house thousands of expatriate families, the number of whose members could run up to 200,000. In a separate block within the city, housing units to accommodate close to a 100,000 single workers are to be built.
The project, work on which is expected to start soon, is to be completed in phases. The city would have shopping complexes, parks and gardens, playgrounds, theatres, restaurants and cafeterias as well as mosques.
