
Mazaya to sell tower for $44m
Kuwait City: Kuwait’s Al Mazaya Holding is to sell its Mazaya Tower, which is currently under construction, to Global Investment House for KD12.9 million ($44.18 million).
Mazaya said it would make a profit of KD6.5 million from the deal, which would be realised next year.
Adhari’s facelift continues
Manama: Work on a BD9.1 million ($24.1 million) project to upgrade Adhari Park in Bahrain is expected to begin shortly, under the second phase of a project to revive the area, which hosts one of kingdom’s most renowned landmarks – a natural freshwater spring called Ain Adhari. The spring was renovated and reopened to the public two years ago, while the new park is expected to be ready in 18 months.
Roads upgrade studied
Kuwait City: Fluor Corporation of the US has awarded Salem Al-Marzouk and Sabah Abi-Hanna (SSH) of Kuwait and Hyder Consulting of the UK a contract to study the upgrade of roads in KOC’s operational area. The project will cost KD29.2 million ($100 million).
The 200-day study entails the evaluation of the existing 350-km road network, carrying out a safety audit and traffic forecast, and studying the construction of the new road networks to fields.
Gateways design contest set
Manama: A contest will be launched to design seven gateways leading to villages and towns in Muharraq, Bahrain.
The gates will be located at the entrances to Galali, Dair and Samaheej, to the north and south of Hidd, as well as in the old and new towns in Arad.
The Muharraq Municipal Council is organising the contest, conceived by the municipality.
Fisia wins desal deal
Doha:Italy’s Impregilo said its Fisia Italimpianti unit had won a $260 million contract to build a desalination plant in Qatar. The plant will convert 140 million litres of sea water into drinking water every day and will be linked to a gas-fuelled power plant to be built by General Electric Corporation.
ABB to boost power grid
Manama: Engineering group ABB has won a $27 million contract in Bahrain to strengthen the country’s electricity grid, the company said. ABB, which will supply substations, said the order included control, protection and auxiliary equipment. The substations will be engineered, manufactured and commissioned by the end of July 2007.
$5bn Doha expansion to be launched
Doha: Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company is to launch its flagship $5 billion Lusail Development this month.
The project aims to build an entire new expansion of Doha, complete with state-of-the-art buildings, services and facilities that will cover a total area of 35 sq km to eventually accommodate 150,000 to 200,000 people, according Qatari Diar chief executive officer Nasser Hassan Al Ansari.
New mall for Jeddah on way
Jeddah: A joint venture of Almabani General Contractors Company and Al Saad General Contracting Company has been awarded a a SR76 million ($20.2 million) contract to build the Red Sea Mall in Jeddah. The project, for the Red Sea Malls Market Company, is scheduled for completion in April 2007.
The work involves the construction, completion, maintenance and warranty of the mall which, includes a three-level retail complex – lower ground, ground and first floor – and two towers with four typical storeys.
Koreans invest in Omani shipyard
Muscat: Oman has signed a letter of intent with South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering to invest in the RO192.5 million ($500 million) Duqm port and shipyard in Al Wusta.
The yard is likely to include a post-graving dock able to handle ultra-large crude carriers (ULCCs) of up to 400,000 dwt and a ship repair yard, along with two breakwaters with a length of four km. It will include a township, and probably an airport.
Work on the project is to be tendered in three main packages: maritime works; shipyard; and landworks. Royal Haskoning of the Netherlands in association with Lebanon’s Khatib & Alami was awarded the detailed design contract.
Roads upgrade studied
Makkah: Umm Al Qura University has awarded four contracts worth SR259 million ($69 million) to local Al-Arrab Contracting Company (ACC) for major new facilities at its campus in Makkah. The development includes a SR168.4 million ($45 million) two-storey 400-bed hospital, academic support buildings, precast car park facility, and medical laboratories.
