THE Port of Salalah will embark on a major expansion of its container and general cargo terminals during the next phase of its development — an upgrade that would effectively launch the Omani port into the major league of transhipment hubs of the world.

The proposed expansion is the centrepiece of a revised master-plan envisaging a significant scale-up of port infrastructure and facilities to cater for the gateway’s long-term growth, a top official said. The general cargo terminal will be expanded to reach an additional 1,200 m of multipurpose berths and facilities for dry bulk commodities.
The container terminal will be gradually expanded to reach a total quay length of 8 km over a 20-year timeframe, while taking the port’s capacity to a mammoth 15 million TEUs per annum.
