The second runway at Abu Dhabi International Airport opened last month, following the completion of construction in September and certification by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

An Etihad A320 made history when it became the first plane to use the runway on a media trip, according to Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC).
Built at a cost of Dh1 billion ($271 million), the 4,100 m runway is located 2 km north of the existing runway.
Work on the project included the development of the airstrip, two major taxiways, two cross-field taxiways and two fire stations.  The new runway will form a key part of ADAC’s  plan to increase total capacity at the airport that will culminate with the construction and completion of the midfield terminal complex (MTC).
Meanwhile, operations at the airport’s new Terminal 3 facility have also commenced.
The second runway and Terminal 3 are part of a large-scale development of Abu Dhabi International Airport.
Other features of the masterplan include the construction of a new air traffic control (ATC) complex and the 500,000 sq m MTC complex, in addition to extensive cargo and maintenance facilities.
A business park and logistics warehouse are under construction with Phase One set to come on line early next year.
