Mott MacDonald has been appointed to develop and implement the construction environmental management plans (CEMP) for Aldar Properties’ flagship development of the Central Market in Abu Dhabi.

The site has cultural and historic importance to locals as it was home to the original Central Market known as the Old Suq where locals gathered to exchange goods and socialise.
The 56,000 sq m re-development will comprise an 88-storey residential tower, a 58-storey office block, five- and four-star hotels, retail outlets, car parking facilities, a new suq, a mosque and parks with landscaped gardens, some of which are terraced over the main retail podium. A retail bridge will also be constructed crossing Khalifa Street, the main high street in Abu Dhabi, says a spokesman for the developer.
The CEMP describes how environmental requirements are to be managed during construction. The plan, which is required by law in order to obtain a building permit, covers a number of issues including:
• Management of potential nuisance issues with local residences, such as noise and dust from the construction site;
• Monitoring the risk of contamination of soil and groundwater, particularly important due to the location of the project; and
• Training of site workers to ensure measures outlined in the plan are implemented.
“We are thrilled to be part of this exciting development for Abu Dhabi,” says Mark Grundy, Mott MacDonald’s project manager.
“Mott MacDonald has a wealth of expertise in delivering infrastructure projects in the Middle East and welcomes this opportunity to restore an important part of local culture and enhance amenities,” he adds.
Mott MacDonald will work with Aldar until the end of the construction programme in mid 2010.
