Jamarat bridge to be built

Saudi Binladin has demolished the existing Jamarat Bridge to make way for the new one.

The project aims at reducing congestion in Jamarat and avoiding the occurrence of stampedes.
The main contractor for the project has also established a factory in Bahra, 50 km north of Jeddah, to make concrete blocks required for the project, which will be completed in four phases, a company spokesman said.
Osama Al Bar, director of King Fahd Haj Research Institute, which designed the new Jamarat, said the first phase, which would be completed before next Haj, would include a ground and first level in addition to a basement that will be used only for support services.
"In the following year, four levels of the bridge will be ready," Al Bar said. The new design aims at fragmenting the density of pilgrims near the Jamarat and helping them reach the stoning point quickly.
Eight Saudi and foreign banks have offered to provide SR1.5 billion ($400 million) in loan for the SR4 billion Jamarat expansion project.
Bank Albilad has agreed to give 24 per cent of the amount. The others are Al-Khaleej Bank, Samba Financial Group, National Commercial Bank, Emirates Bank, Riyad Bank, Banque Saudi Fransi and Saudi Hollandi Bank. The loans are being availed on Islamic principles.
