OMAN’S Bank Sohar has marked 50 years with the signing of a contract to construct a purpose-built structure to house its headquarters.
The new headquarters will be an architectural landmark that will be built in the exclusive Airport Heights district, one of the most strategic areas of Muscat, Oman’s capital city.
Madrid-based Lamela, a renowned design consultancy, will design and supervise construction of the headquarters.
The inspiration for the conceptual design of the new headquarters is drawn from the Sohar Fort, an edifice that is a reminder of Sohar’s past as a maritime hub. Other elements of modern-day Sohar also form an integral part of the design, which will bear eco-friendly designs and features.
“A key highlight of Bank Sohar’s design is its environment-friendly attributes. Energy efficiency and conservation, use of local materials, and recycling are an inherent part of the building’s design and construction. Also factored into Lamela’s design is the site’s undulating contours, which obviates the need for expensive rock excavation work,” said Lamela chief executive officer Carlos Lamela.
The interior will feature a central atrium representing an oasis, hanging gardens, internal bridges and sea views. Embellishments in copper – a reflection of the metal’s pivotal place in Sohar’s history – are envisioned on the façade, as well as on the inside.
