Work on the New Doha International Airport (NDIA) is set to enter the next phase following the completion of reclamation work.
“Both runways are taking shape and terminal infrastructure is well under construction. The airport is due to open in 2010,” Qatar Airways chief executive officer, Akbar Al Baker said.
The airport will have an initial capacity of 24 million passengers a year, eventually touching 50 million during the final development phase from 2015 onwards.
The new airport will be the world’s first to be designed and built specifically for Airbus’ new A380-800 double-decker ‘super jumbo’ – the largest passenger aircraft ever built. Sixty per cent of the new airport site is being built on land dredged from the sea.
