The Big 5

Mammut Building Systems (MBS), one of the region’s largest manufacturers of pre-engineered steel buildings (PEBs) and polyurethane-injected sandwich panels, will be exhibiting its services and profiles at this year’s Big 5 show.

“The Big 5 is a very important show in the region and offers good opportunities to interact with new and existing customers and keep abreast of the industry,” says a company spokesman.
To meet the growing demand for its building systems, the company has recently embarked on an expansion drive at its Hamriyah Free Zone (HFZ) facility which aims to double its capacity from 6,000 tonnes per month to 12,000 tonnes per month, according to Bob Webster, managing director of MBS.
MBS is also building a structural steel division, producing steel for high-rise and multi-storey buildings and in the oil and gas sector.
“MBS’ recent partnership with Emaar Industries and Investments (EII) has facilitated the expansion drive,” Webster adds.
The deal with EII will also aid the company’s expansion into countries such as India where it is setting up a factory with a capacity to manufacture 12,000 tonnes of pre-engineered steel per month.
“Our partnership with EII will further strengthen our competitive advantage,” he says, adding that this partnership would further increase Mammut’s annual average growth of 100 per cent for the last seven years.
In addition, MBS has been appointed as PEB buildings supplier by the Japanese/Turkish joint venture company JT Metro, the main contractor for the Dubai Metro project, and has also won the steelwork subcontract contract for the first phase of the Dubai World Central Airport cargo terminal being constructed by the joint venture of Arabtec and Max Bogl at Jebel Ali.
The company has unveiled other plans for the year, which include the introduction of the new long span purlin G-2 (Second Generation). Unlike conventional purlins that have a maximum span of about 8 m, the new G-2 purlin can go up to 12 m or more. This will give customers a more flexible building, fewer frames and foundations, a shorter time to erect and savings in terms of both time and space, says Webster.
MBS, which started operations from Jebel Ali in 1997, moved to its current 30,000 sq m covered factory in Sharjah in 2001. The facility has the capacity to deliver 6,000 tonnes of pre-engineered steel and over 180,000 sq m of polyurethane-injected sandwich panels per month, says the spokesman.
MBS is part of the Mammut Group, a leading enterprise and the holding company of three entities with a vision to lead the market and a total turnover of $520 million.

Major player
The PEB concept is recognised to be the most versatile and economical method of constructing buildings up to three storeys. In the past five years, MBS has grown rapidly to become one of the major players in the Gulf market for pre-engineered buildings.
The company has delivered to more than 1,800 projects throughout the Gulf, Europe, Africa and South East Asian region for several prestigious clients, such as the huge complex of buildings for Dubai Textile City project; a large distribution centre in Dubai Investment Park (DIP) for Public Warehousing Corporation; a building on the World island for Nakheel; a factory for the Al Ghurair Group’s galvanising plant and the Al Jazeera Pipe Factory in Abu Dhabi; as well as stores for Emke group and many other prominent projects in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, West Africa, Morocco and Ukraine.
The company follows the latest US design standards and code of practices when designing a building and uses three dimensional (3D) design and detailing software on all stages, from proposals to final design, finishing with the building detailing. Adopting the latest design codes and clear approval drawings allow the customer to visualise the project and the use of 3D computer modelling creates almost error-free connection details, making Mammut buildings problem-free in erection, says the spokesman.

Quality control
Backed by a thorough process of quality system audits and product testing, MBS became the first manufacturer of polyurethane sandwich panels to be awarded the approval of Dubai Central Laboratory Department (DCLD) for its fire-retardant Ecosafe E product. “This is crucially important in the Dubai market, where this type of panel is now compulsory and compliance is to be rigidly enforced by DCLD,” Webster concludes.
