Work on the new BD64 million ($169.8 million) Sitra Causeway will begin in October.
It has been contracted to Malaysian company Gamuda Berhad and will be completed in early 2009.
The project will involve replacing the existing Sitra Causeway bridges and include improvement to Mina Salman junction, with flyovers at Umm Al Hassam, North Sitra and Nabih Saleh.
The idea will be to make the road from the King Faisal Highway to Hidd as a free-flowing corridor that will help stimulate economic activity and reduce the inconvenience to road users. The current traffic flow shows about 120,000 vehicles a day use the Umm Al Hassam junction so it will be quite a challenge for the contractor and the ministry to deal with high level traffic during the construction.
A number of alternatives to minimise delays are being selected. One of the measures would be to temporarily open up the junction with Shaikh Isa bin Salman Highway at Al Qadeseya Avenue near the Al Ahli Club.
The length of the new causeway will be around 3 km, in the relatively shallow water of the environmentally-sensitive Tubli Bay. It will comprise two concrete marine bridges approximately 200 m and 400 m in length and embankments of about 2,400 m total length.
