Work on a BD10 million plus ($26.55 million) new campus of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland-Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI-MUB) started off at Busaiteen, Muharraq, with Bahrain’s Prime Minister Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa and Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Mary Harney jointly laying the foundation stone.
The 90,000 sq m campus, which is expected to be operational by October next year, will replace MUB’s current premises in the Seef District.
The MUB’s new location is beside the King Hamad General Hospital, which is also currently under construction.
The university and the hospital are key components of the Health Oasis, an international centre of excellence for Bahrain and the region being jointly developed by the RCSI and the Bahrain government.
The new university campus will be built in phases starting with the central administration and medical teaching building and student accommodation.
Other schools in the fields of nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy and dentistry will be added to the campus at a later stage. The campus architecture will reflect Irish and Bahraini history and Celtic and Islamic cultures.
The RCSI-MUB will be situated near the state-of-the-art King Hamad General Hospital, where the majority of clinical teaching will take place.
