Seven Bahrain-based contractors have submitted their bids for infrastructure works at Bahrain’s new Khalifa bin Salman Port and the tenders worth BD26.5 million ($70.3 million) to BD41 million were opened in public recently.
The contractors who have submitted their tenders include: Mohammed Mohsin Al Kharafi, A A Nass Contracting, Cebarco, Ahmed Mansoor Al A’ali, Burhan International, Haji Hassan Group, and Mushrif Trading and Contracting.
“The tender documents will now be sent to the Works and Housing Ministry for its final evaluation,” said Tender Board chairman Dr Abdulhussain Mirza.
The port infrastructure includes the construction of port pavings, gantry crane rails, roads, pavements, electricity and water distribution centres, and the provision of other services, including fire fighting, telephone systems and data link ducting.
All work on the BD200 million super port in Hidd is expected to be completed by 2006.
A BD80 million reclamation, dredging and harbour wall construction work has already been completed ahead of schedule.
The main port work was awarded to a consortium comprising Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, Nass Contracting and Nass-Murray & Roberts joint venture.
Work started in January 2002 and was scheduled for completion in 2006.
However, the combined effort of the three contractors as well as consultant Ace-Posford Haskoning and the Works and Housing Ministry has resulted in an early completion of the project.
The project followed years of intensive research, in view of the marked increase in economic activity, increase in the volume of foreign trade, a rise in the number of vessels arriving in Bahrain.
The 18-m-deep berth, against 10 m at the present port, will have the capacity to accommodate the biggest container vessels in the world.
