Work on a BD50 million ($132.6 million) project replacing the existing Sitra Causeway bridges in Bahrain is to start in January.
The Works and Housing Ministry has invited contractors to submit their prequalification bids for the contract, which involves replacing causeway bridges with new structures on a revised alignment adjacent to the existing causeway.
It will include the construction of marine bridges and associated embankment works together with flyovers at both ends of the causeway and on Nabih Saleh.
The project cost includes BD40 million for the causeway and the bridges and BD10 million for associated services.
The three-kilometre-long new causeway will comprise two concrete marine bridges measuring approximately 200 m and 400 m and embankments of about 2,400 m total in length.
The embankment and bridges will carry a dual carriageway road with four lanes in each direction, together with extensive services. Flyovers are to be constructed at Umm Al Hassam and North Sitra, which are located at the northern and southern ends of the causeway respectively, and also at Nabih Saleh in the middle section of the causeway.
The project is expected to be completed in two years.
