Tenders are expected to be issued shortly for the construction of a new BD1 million ($2.65 million) national theatre to be built next to the Art Centre, near the Bahrain National Museum.
The theatre will have a seating capacity of 750, said information ministry under-secretary Mahmood Al Mahmood.
A UAE firm had originally developed the designs for the project, which is now being re-designed by Bahraini consultant engineers Dheya Al Towfiqi. Work on the project is expected to start this month.
“It will be completed in time for the GCC Theatre Festival, scheduled to be held in Bahrain in October next year,” he added.
Al Mahmood said the Heritage Village would remain in place. “The construction of a modern cultural theatre in the same area will make it an exclusive area for culture and arts.”
The Works and Housing Ministry will soon appoint a contractor to carry out the project through the Tender Board.
