On site from the outset ... Delta supplied close to 3,000 pieces of floodlights, cables and others.

Translating vision and acumen to business success can be a daunting task. However, it is a task that the Delta Group of companies has accomplished, thanks to clear vision, a goal to meet delivery schedules on time, every time, and a focus on anticipating demand in today’s fast-paced economy, says Pradeep Kumar, general manager of the Delta Group of companies.

Delta has emerged as a major player in Bahrain’s electrical and construction materials trading sector, and with several prestigious contracts – including projects from the Bahrain City Centre – under his belt, Kumar is all set to propel Delta to an exciting future.
Kumar sees the massive development in the retail and entertainment sectors coming up in Seef as a major growth opportunity for his company.
“The Bahrain City Centre is one of the major projects that we’ve been involved with,” he says. “Both Delta Trading and Delta Electricals have been associated with this project right from the beginning. We’ve been supplying Cebarco WCT, the main contractor for the project, with several important construction items.”
The City Centre remains Kumar’s pet project. Until mid-2007, Delta Trading alone concluded business worth BD150,000 ($398,000) through the supply of construction accessories for the project.
“When we also consider the contribution from Delta Electrical, this figure is considerably larger,” says Kumar. “The company has supplied a range of electrical accessories used for temporary lighting at the City Centre project. The entire lighting that you see onsite has been provided through us. In all, we’ve supplied close to 3,000 pieces of floodlights, cables and other electrical accessories.”
Delta has been able to clinch nearly 90 per cent of the project’s budget for electrical supplies last year, and that, according to Kumar, is an achievement that can be attributed to Delta’s business motto of timely delivery and competitive pricing.
“We’ve been able to deliver goods within two days to a week of issuing the LPO,” he adds. “We’ve also been very competitive in regards to pricing, and have been able to successfully deliver materials at the prices that the contractor wanted. The electrical division alone has won orders worth BD850,000 ($2.25 million) for the City Centre project. This year, we’ve already completed delivery for orders worth more than BD140,000 ($371,000). If you take into account the volume of business transacted, the City Centre is the second major project undertaken by the company.”
While the majority of earlier orders have been for temporary works, Delta Electrical has supplied electrical fittings for permanent connections this year to Comsip Al Ali, the company responsible for electrical works on the City Centre project.
Another major project that Delta Electrical has recently been involved with is the desalination plant in Bahrain. “For this project, we supplied materials worth BD450,000 ($1.19 million) over a year to thermal desalination specialist Sidem,” says Kumar. Delta Electrical is also engaged in several other prestigious projects in the kingdom, supplying construction and electrical materials principally through Al Hamad Contracting, Comsip Al Ali, Delta Construction Company, Emco, GP Zachariades and Airmech.
In addition to local sales, the company has also been able to win a some major projects worth $1 million in the markets of Saudi Arabia (Jubail Industrial City), Qatar, and the UAE (Fujairah desalination plant).
Kumar sees the 2006-07 as a decisive phase of growth for  Delta. Turnover, which was at BD800,000 ($3 million) during 2006, rose to BD1.5 million ($5.7 million) last year. “This year too is right on track,” he points out. “We’ve already achieved a sizeable portion of our target.”
Established in 2004, Delta has only recently been converted to a limited liability firm. “In the short span of four years,’ he says proudly, “we’ve been associated with many of the major projects in the kingdom. We now have offices in Dubai (Abhitec Electrical Trading) to meet the growing sales demand in the emirates.’
So, how hard was the path to success?
The youthful entrepreneur has seen his share of ups and downs. “It is important to have a clear vision,” says Kumar. “Vision helps you understand and judge opportunities, and empower your business. In my opinion, there should also be some healthy dissatisfaction to spur you on.”
He has the future of Delta charted out. We’ve planned a range of innovative marketing offers. But we will not forget the basic goal on which our success has been built – on timely delivery, every time. In this fast developing world, Delta Electrical will also have to move fast to keep up with the demands. That, in essence, will be our mantra for the future.”
