Bilfinger Berger, Germany’s second-largest builder, has bagged the biggest ever contract in the company’s history in the Middle East.
The QR4.89 billion ($1.34 billion) package, will involve the construction of 6,000 homes within Qatar’s Barwa City project, a company spokesman stated.
Barwa City will be built in two phases. “The current contract is for Phase 1,” Ghanim bin Saad Al Saad, Barwa’s chairman said.
As part of the deal, Bilfinger Berger will build houses and associated infrastructure.
“It is the biggest project we have here now and a very important project for us,” said the spokesman. “We are delivering the entire project including infrastructure and central cooling, within the Phase 1.”
The complex, the first of its kind to be built in the region, will have centralised air-conditioning, cooking gas networks, TV and Internet connectivity besides schools, health clubs, parks and other modern amenities.
Work on the project will start soon and is expected to be ready by May 2010. Once complete, the city is expected to house some 25,000 people.
The project is located in the south of Mesaimeer Road which connects Doha city with the Industrial Area and will be spread over 2.7 million sq m. The rectangular plot on which the project will rise, will be 1.5 km long and 1.8 km wide.
The second phase will add 2,144 residential units with a capacity to accommodate some 10,000 people, in addition to a 200-bed hospital, restaurants, cafes, nurseries, banks and commercial complexes.
