Study blames finance for delays

Private construction projects in Bahrain are being delayed because of problems mainly related to financing, planning and labour, according to a study.

The study conducted by Central Governorate senior engineer Yusuf Al Malki covered 424 property owners, contractors and consultants and concluded that of 11,941 construction projects carried out in Bahrain in 2003, the majority had faced delays.
Those who responded to the survey cited financial factors as the major cause of delay. They said the main financial obstacle was late payment by owners, followed by escalating prices of building materials.
“In the case of late payments to contractors, this causes delays because they may have to reduce the number of workers because of lack of finances. In some cases, contractors decide to stop work and carry out other projects until they get paid,” he said.
