Bahrain is likely to award the contract for the new Khalifa bin Salman Port infrastructure works shortly.
Recently, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) extended a BD22.6 million ($60 million) loan to help build the port.
Seven Bahrain-based contractors have submitted tenders for the project in January 2005.
The port infrastructure includes the construction of port pavings, gantry crane rails, roads, pavements, electricity and water distribution centres, and the provision of other services, including fire fighting, telephone systems and data link ducting.
The 18-m deep berth, against 10 m at the present port, will have the capacity to accommodate the biggest container vessels in the world.
