Aluminium Dubai sees $300m deal

THE second edition of Aluminium Dubai 2011, the Middle East’s leading aluminium trade show, concluded with exhibitors reporting a significant increase in the number and total value of projects that were signed.

These included a $300-million turnkey EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contract between Italian company Fata EPC and Oman Aluminium Rolling Company.

Event organiser Reed Exhibitions said the show, which saw the participation of 177 exhibitors, also registered a record visitor turnout, as footfall increased by eight per cent compared to the previous year to reach 3,000 visitors from over 50 countries. Aluminium Dubai serves as a regional platform that brings together international industry leaders including aluminium producers, processors and manufacturers of raw materials and end products with aluminium components as well as suppliers of technologies and accessories for aluminium production, processing and refinement.

Power-Gen Asia gains support

POWER-GEN Asia, the region’s premier conference and exhibition for power generation, transmission and distribution industries, to be held at Kuala Lumpur  Convention Centre (KLCC), in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from September 27 to 29, continues to gain industry support across the region.

As well as endorsements from the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Sarawak Energy and the Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga), the support of Sabah Electricity, the Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), The Electrical and Electronics Association of Malaysia (TEEAM) and the Malaysian Society for Engineering and Technology (MSET) has also been confirmed.

Event director Glenn Ensor said: “We are delighted with the additional and continued support of the Malaysian industry and authorities. It demonstrates the importance of the topic of energy and power and that Power-Gen Asia is at the forefront as a meeting place to discuss these challenges faced by the region.”

Glass event to highlight trends

MAJOR issues that have influenced the glass industry will be in focus at the upcoming Glass Performing Days (GPD) conference in Tampere, Finland, this month (June 17 to 20) where special workshops, attended by 50 participants, will examine trend issues and analyses.

Besides the 18 workshops, GPD Finland 2011 will bring a totally new workshop concept: The Future of Architectural Glass Industry, which aims to define the megatrends of the architectural glass industry in the future.

This workshop will focus on three separate baskets of identifiable trends: Environmental and legal trends, technology trends and global, customer and market trends.

Expo to highlight marine sector

THE second Annual Marine and Coastal Engineering Middle East summit, dedicated to the delivery of environmentally sustainable, high quality and cost-effective marine and coastal projects, will be held in Doha, Qatar, this month ( June 19 to 22).

“The GCC currently has an estimated $35 billion worth of marine projects in the pipeline. The rapid growth in Qatar and the announcement of new mega coastal infrastructure projects are driving opportunities in this region,” says a spokesman for the show.

The summit will bring together key stakeholders from a diverse range of cutting-edge marine projects, representing a unique opportunity to benchmark the region’s leading marine developments.

Green trends at Domotex

ENVIRONMENT-friendly products are set to be a key trend at the region’s annual showpiece events – Domotex Middle East and R+T Middle East.

While the former is dedicated to floor coverings, R+T Middle East will focus on roller shutters, doors/gates, windows and sun protection systems.

The two events will take place at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre in Dubai, UAE, from September 12 to 14.

Angela Schaschen, managing director of Deutsche Messe Dubai Branch, organiser of Domotex Middle East, said: “There is a growing awareness of the environmental impact of materials used for floor coverings. And with the global green building materials market expected to reach $406 billion by 2015, demand for green floor coverings is growing every year.”

Messe Stuttgart International is the joint organiser of R+T Middle East.

Environment seminar pulls crowds

THE ‘Responsive Environments between Universal Relevance and Cultural Reference’ seminar hosted by Msheireb Properties in Doha, Qatar, last month attracted academics, architects, students and professionals. It was the third in the series of lectures organised by the Msheireb Properties’ Chairs in Architecture at Qatar University (QU).

The seminar was conducted by Prof Ashraf Salama, head of the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning and Msheireb Properties co-chair in Architecture at QU, and Prof Tim Makower, Msheireb Properties’ co-chair at QU and partner at Allies and Morrison Architects, London.

Makower’s lecture titled ‘Zoom: How to make Nice Places – Step Two’ referred to notions relevant to the making of successful urban places which are aesthetically pleasing and enjoyable to live while Salama’s ‘Emerging Perspectives on Schooling and School Buildings’ showed the results of his studies on issues relevant to the making of meaningful environments for learning in Qatar.

Saudi plans debut hotel show

THE inaugural Hotel and Hospitality Show Saudi Arabia will reflect the kingdom’s booming hotel, hospitality and tourism industry, which has surged more than 127 per cent over the last decade.

Based on the successful model set by The Hotel Show in Dubai, the show be held from November 12 to 14 at the Jeddah Centre for Forums and Events.

Organised by dmg::events jointly with Mice Arabia Group, the show has been launched to coincide with the kingdom’s hospitality expansion plans, which aims to more than double the number of hotel rooms from 120,000 to 255,000 over the next 10 years. 

PaintExpo 65pc booked

MORE than 65 per cent of all available booth floor space has already been booked for the first PaintExpo Eurasia, which will take place at the Expo Centre Istanbul in Turkey from October 6 to 8.

Exhibitors from 11 countries will cover the entire process sequence for industrial coating technology.

PaintExpo is being organised by FairFair together with its Turkish partner Artkim Fuarcilik, and will be held concurrent to the TurkCoat trade fair for paints and chemicals. The Eurasian offshoot of the leading international trade fair for industrial coating technology will thus present comprehensive, representative offerings right from the very first event.

Experts discuss stadium design

GLOBAL experts in stadium design and development came together in Qatar last month to uncover the latest venue project updates in the run-up to the Fifa World Cup 2022. The Stadium and Venue Design and Development Qatar was the second of IQPC’s stadium series to highlight solutions to the latest challenges in Qatar’s stadium industry, including adequate masterplanning, implementing effective cooling and ensuring multifunctionality of venues.

Ghesa gears up for Cityscape Jeddah

SPAIN’S Ghesa Lumat will take part in the second edition of Cityscape Jeddah, the premier real estate event of the largest GCC market, to be held from June 11 to 13 at the Jeddah Centre for Forums and Events in Saudi Arabia.

The fountains specialist will present its successful “value engineering” concept, which allows clients to reduce the costs of their water features by up to 40 per cent.  The solution was recently used at the Princess Nora University in Riyadh, where Ghesa Lumat cut the costs by 37.5 per cent. With an investment of SR75 million ($19.9 million), the client was able to maintain 187 water features, including a 100-m-long and 4.5-m-high waterfall that moves 120,000 l/min, two fountains that overflow in a total perimeter of 2.4 km, and a square fountain with a total of 327 jets and 562 LED projectors, the company says.
