GE Energy has won the inaugural Power and Utility Company for Jubail and Yanbu award for sustainability from Marafiq, a Saudi Arabian integrated utility company.

The award recognises GE’s key role in the development of advanced technology solutions for the world’s largest independent water and power plant. It was presented to GE during the fourth Saudi Water and Power Forum 2008, which was held last month in Jeddah.
GE Energy was cited for supplying key technology and services, including high-efficiency gas turbine combined cycle systems and a complete Mark VIe plant control system for the Marafiq independent water and power plant in Jubail, Saudi Arabia.
Commenting on the award, Joseph Anis, GE Energy’s regional executive for the Middle East, said: “The project represents an outstanding example of how technology can be applied to meet both the world’s energy and environmental requirements,” he said.
GE Energy’s role includes leading an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) consortium and supplying four combined-cycle power blocks, including 12 Frame 7FA gas turbine-generator sets, four steam turbine-generator sets and 12 heat recovery steam generators, for the project.
Block one of the plant is expected to enter service during the second quarter of next year, blocks two and three in the third and fourth quarters of 2009 respectively, and block four during the first quarter of 2010.
The plant is designed to provide 2,700 MW of power and 800,000 cu m of desalinated water per day for industrial and domestic use.
