Abu Dhabi Municipality has entered into a Dh753.7 million ($205.3 million) contract with Al Jaber Group for the reconstruction of the new Mafraq interchange.

The project, which is part of the Abu Dhabi Development Plan 2030, calls for expansion of the existing bridge and its interchange to provide a high standard of traffic safety and vehicular flow.
The project’s scope of work involves the demolition of the existing bridge, the construction of directional three- level interchange having a two-span post-tensioned box girder bridge, 1,728 m of box girder Viaducts, reconstruction of 5 km of both Abu Dhabi-Al Ain and Dubai-Sila four-lane dual carriageways with all associated slip and loop roads in the vicinity of the new interchange.
The new interchange will consist of three levels of grade-separated traffic, including two viaducts and two loops as well as a 75-m-long main bridge, having four lanes per direction.
“The new expansion will serve new urban and housing developments at Mafraq, Bani Yas, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed City, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed City, Shamekha and Falah,” Dr Juan Al Dhahiri, chairman of Municipal Affairs Department, said.
“The upgrade project aims to ease the heavy traffic volumes generated by on-going development work in the area,” director general of Abu Dhabi Municipality Juma Al Junaibi said.
He explained that the feasibility studies had taken into consideration anticipated traffic movement in the next 25 years. The construction of the project will take around 24 months to complete.
