Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) has last month awarded two major earthworks contracts for the Khalifa Industrial Zone in Taweelah.
The contracts, which together cost Dh1 billion ($272.2 million) and involve more than 40 million cu m of landfill, have been awarded to Al Jaber Transport and General Contracting and Ghantoot Transport and General Contracting Establishment.
These awards mark the start of construction activities in Area A of Khalifa Industrial Zone, which occupies 53 sq km of the 137 sq km Khalifa Industrial Zone.
The scope of works involves clearing and grubbing 19 sq km of land area within the Khalifa Industrial Zone followed by filling, spreading and compacting the area to a new raised level of +2.5m MSL.
The two contracts which require approximately 300 trucks will be moving over 1.2 million cu m of fill per month (which equates to 1,500 truck movements per day) from an ADPC borrow area on the east of Sheikh Rashid Highway to the Taweelah industrial area. The works will be completed in 36 months and will progressively release levelled areas for phased development, says a spokesman for ADPC.
In February this year, ADPC had announced the commencement of dredging and reclamation at the site of the Khalifa Port. The contract involves the dredging of 45 million cu m as well as reclamation of the offshore port island which will cover a 275 hectare area.
The dredging, which forms part of the first phase of development on the project, will help create a deep-draft 12-km-long approach channel to the proposed port.
The Stage 1A development will include over 3.2 km of quay walls able to accommodate a throughput of over 2 million TEUs and over 6 million tonnes of general cargo.
Four additional development phases have been planned by 2028, which will increase the overall throughput of the port to over 22 million TEUs along with 35 tonnes of general, break, dry, and liquid bulk cargo.
The $1.5-billion turnkey dredging contract was awarded last October to a consortium including Archirodon Construction (Overseas), Boskalis Westminster Middle East and Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company.
Strategically located between the cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai in Taweelah, Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone (KPIZ) is a multi-billion dollar project designed as a multi-purpose facility that involves the construction of a world-scale container and industrial port in addition to the development of over 100 sq km of industrial, logistics, commercial, educational, and residential special economic and free zones.
KPIZ is a central plank of "Plan Abu Dhabi 2030", and will play a major role in Abu Dhabi's industrial and economic diversification in serving as a key hub for large-scale industrial investments that will be serviced by a state-of-the-art port, transport and other infrastructure facilities and services.
