Bahrain International Airport is to undergo a BD125 million ($332 million) expansion, which will equip the airport to receive the new 500-passenger A380 super-jumbo jets.
Work will continue over the next three years, it was revealed at the second Middle East Airports Conference organised by MEED at the Ritz-Carlton Bahrain Hotel and Spa.
A multi-storey car park/retail and office complex will also be built at the airport, said Civil Aviation Affairs under-secretary Captain Abdulrahman Al Gaoud. “We are now shortlisting consultants for our next phase in extending the passenger terminal to the east, which will include an additional 10 aircraft parking stands and eight airbridges. The airport currently has seven airbridges and 46 parking stands, including cargo.
“Construction of the new control tower is to be completed in the latter part of next year,” said Capt Al Gaoud.
“We are also in the process of awarding contracts for a new perimeter fence and improved security cameras.
“All these together with the terminal expansion will cost $250 million (BD95 million) and will be complete by the end of 2007.” Designs are in the final stages for a BD30 million new multi-storey car park, which can take up to 4,000 cars.
Work on the car park will start next year and take 18 months to two years.
