Standing tough

XDS systems.... diagram shows the strength of the glass

Xtreme Defence Security (XDS) is looking to boost its market share in the Gulf, through its marketing and distribution office based at the Dubai Airport Free Zone in the UAE.

The company represents a range of products for safety and security of civilians, law enforcement personnel and the armed forces in the Middle East, Africa, CIS and South Asia on an exclusive basis.

''These are patented cutting-edge technology products from leading manufacturers in the US and come with internal as well as independent testing reports for US, British and International Standards,'' says a spokesman for the company which is based in the British Virgin Islands.

The company is currently promoting three hi-tech products - a  protective  glass strengthening system,  a bullet-resistant, unidirectional glass/plastic armour system and an instant armouring system - in the Gulf.

Elaborating on these products, the spokesman says: ''Glass is everywhere, but is the weakest link to the safety of any building or vehicle in protecting lives and property. The protective  glass strengthening system is a remarkably strong synthetic film and acrylic adhesive system that, when  applied to any ordinary glass, turns it into a tough, super-strength protective shield.

''This patented acrylic adhesive is a glass-penetrating acrylic chemical bonding agent, that when applied actually infiltrates the glass pores, gets absorbed and hardens, thereby strengthening the glass itself.  This revolutionary process of bonding acrylic with the pores of the glass strengthens the glass up to 400 per cent. When used along with the polyester sheet, it repels back items that are hurled at it.  In fact it becomes so strong that in certain thickness that it becomes bullet resistant. This system compared to existing glass can reduce damage and injury by up to 80 per cent. It is the only glass-strengthening product on the world market which is why it is used at the US Senate Office Building, US Supreme Court, and the US Department of Defense.''

Moving on to the bullet-resistant, unidirectional glass/plastic armour system, he says:
This Xtreme  Unidirectional Protection System (XUPS) has the unique quality of protecting against hostile fire, while allowing return fire from the safe interior of a car, building or other structure.

''Depending on the level of protection desired (up to level IV NIJ), a series of polycarbonate, acrylics and glass layers are merged in a special manufacturing process using proprietary compounds of special glue or resin compounds.  The resulting glass is significantly lighter than ordinary products of similar protection levels, has smaller cross section profiles and produces extremely low distortion while maintaining clarity of level of up to 90 per cent.

''The bullet-resistant glass, unidirectional glass and opaque components can be combined in a low cost (relative to other options), lighter weight protection systems for transport vehicles, money-in-transfer vehicles, boats, buildings, entry points, lockable revolving doors, holding cells and other law enforcement activities, ballistic shields, private home protection, high risk retail stores, banks and other financial institutions and for portable armour systems. The product is being used by a select group of clients including the United Nations and the World Bank.''

On the instant armouring system, he says: ''The peel and stick instant armouring system is a lightweight, semi-flexible composite protective armour system unique in the market. It is capable of withstanding armour piercing rounds up to the common NATO 7.62 AP round.  This modifiable armour can stop a 0.50 calibre armour piercing bullet at 40 ft.  It quickly applies to any smooth curved or flat surface within a military, law enforcement or private vehicle, building structure or aircraft for instant threat protection. It can also be applied to most doors, counters and partitions for instant protection. It can be applied to most metal, plastic, fibreglass and concrete structures.

''This revolutionary patent pending armouring system incorporates a unique construction of multi-layer fabrics and adhesives that provides threat protection against NIJ STD-0108.01 Level II, IIA, III, IIIA and IV and has passed ballistic tests for multi-hit capability.

''The product is ideal for government buildings, banks, high risk retail stores, malls, police stations, vehicles, aircraft and marine craft.''
