Protective role

Leading paint manufacturer Hempel says it prides itself on providing the best coating solutions to the special and challenging problems faced by its clients.

Hempadur Mastic 45881 - a two-component, high solids epoxy coating with good adhesion and wetting properties - is a trusted and reliable solution with an excellent history of performance in harsh conditions of the Gulf, according to Cherian Varghese, Hempel's national co-ordinator for protective coatings.

"It scores over a number of traditional epoxy products and offers numerous advantages to the owners and applicators in the Gulf region," says Varghese.

Some of the advantages he cites for the product are:

  • A high-solids content and high-build nature, which makes the system very cost-effective and volatile organic compliant (VOC).

  • Excellent surface tolerance, which makes it ideal for areas where only minimal surface preparation is possible;

  • Being self-priming, it can be used as an intermediate as well as finishing coat in a multi-coat system;

  • Good mechanical properties, making it durable and long-lasting;

  • Fast-drying, helping contractors save time and money;

  • It requires a minimum number of coats to attain the required thickness, thus bringing about savings in application costs; and

  • It can be applied by airless spray.

    Varghese continues: "Hempadur Mastic 45881 is specially designed for the protection of structural steelwork in a corrosive environment and has been successfully used on exteriors of large tanks, chemical and petrochemical plants, bridges, windmills, in above-the-waterline marine locations such as ship decks and superstructures and even on grain cargo holds."

    "This product has been proven for its durability and ease of application in medium to severely corrosive environments and well received by customers," he adds. "Hempadur Mastic 45881 has been tested under different exposures and carries various certificates and approvals."

    Available in a range of colours, Hempadur Mastic 45881 is approved by a major oil company in Saudi Arabia for external protection of large tanks and steel structures.

    It can be tinted in many other non-stock shades on Hempel's multi-tint system, offering users a wide colour choice, Varghese says.

    The company has supplied Hempadur Mastic 45881 for some prestigious projects which were completed this year, such as:

  • Water tanks at Al Hasa for the Water and Sewage Authority, which were completed in January;

  • Nesma tanks for Saudi Aramco at Abqaiq (February);

  • Potable water tanks for the Royal Commission at Jubail (March);

  • Barges and other structures for the Frontier Force (March).

    Other recently completed projects which have used the epoxy coating are:

  • Exterior maintenance of Saline Water Conversion Corporation's potable water storage tanks (completed last September)

  • Maintenance of silos of the Grain Silos & Flour Mills Organisation (December 2001).
