DWTC to be expanded

Dubai: Consultants have been appointed and preliminary work has started on the new 3,500-seat Convention Centre on the grounds of the Dubai World Trade Centre.

The huge convention centre will be ready for the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) conference in 2003, a Gulf News report said.

'We expect construction to begin very soon,' Dubai 2003 Office event co-ordinator-general Ibrahim Belselah said while briefing bank managers.

However, the reports did not name the consultants.

The previous conference auditorium, the former Congress Centre, has been converted into the Dubai Financial Market.

The first user of the expanded exhibition capacity will be Gitex 2001, which will be held at DWTC from October 14-18.

Meanwhile, the Dubai World Trade Centre is to be expanded to eight halls from the present seven. Construction of the 4,000-sq m new hall is expected to be completed in September.
