A CONSORTIUM led by India’s Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a contract worth $764 million to design and build the New Salalah International Airport in Oman, according to a newspaper report.
An L&T division, along with the local Galfar Engineering & Contracting, will be involved in the complete design of the airport, including airside and landside works, and construction of the 660,000-sq-ft passenger terminal, the air traffic control tower, and ancillary buildings including MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) systems and airport-wide system networks, according to India’s Business Standard newspaper.
The project is scheduled for completion in 30 months, and L&T’s share of the contract is at $500 million, it said, adding that L&T and Galfar headed off bids by local players J&P and a Alsim Alarko-NCC joint venture.
The contract is the largest overseas EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) order ever won by Buildings and Factories Operating Company, which is part of L&T’s construction division, the report said.
L&T already has a significant presence in Oman through L&T Oman, a joint venture company of L&T and Zubair Corporation.
Galfar Engineering & Contracting is a major infrastructure company in Oman with a turnover of over $1 billion. The company also has presence in India and has won a few road projects in northern and western regions of the country.
