KALESERAMIK, a leading Turkish ceramics specialist, has won a renowned design award for one of collections of luxury wall tiles.
The Orientile collection, designed by Can Yalman for Çanakkale Seramik and Kalebodur – two of Kaleseramik’s brands – won a coveted 2009 red dot award in the category of product design.
“We are delighted to have won a red dot, which is an international stamp of quality,” says Kaleseramik brand specialist Selin Cevik Ersayin, adding that the award will further boost the company’s business prospects in the face of a global recession.
Launched last year, the Orientile wall tile collection captures the rich heritage of Ottoman and Seljuk culture in three-dimensional form, says Ersayin.
The luxurious ceramic wall tiles come in three distinct lines: Aya, Feza, and Rumi.
“Aya’s draws its lineage from the rich embellishment of a Sultan’s ceremonial robe. Inspired by Ottoman motifs, the series is influenced by the riches once designed to please a Sultan and has been given simple contemporary interpretations in white, black, beige (matt and glossy), Bordeaux, mink and petrol blue (glossy),” he says.
Rich in the historic tradition of Seljuk culture, Feza’s motifs are harmoniously blended into a contemporary design language. From a single quadrangular form, Feza tiles join to take on a distinctive hexagonal, flower-like shape. The series is available in white, black, beige (matt and glossy), Bordeaux, mink and petrol blue (glossy), while their geometric patterns promise to add rich colours and vibrant ambiance to any setting.
Inspired by golden ornamentation and tombac arts, Rumi’s design is a harmonious fusion of the past blended with modern values to offer understated elegance in its black-yellow colours.
The red dot awards was instituted in 1955 by Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen of Germany and has since grown to become one of the largest and best known design competitions in the world.
Given annually, the awards fall under three categories: product design, communication design, and design concept.
Winning products are displayed at the red dot design museum on the premises of the Zollverein World Cultural Heritage site in Essen, Germany. The awards attract more than 11,000 submissions from 61 countries.
