B Series low on fuel, high on productivity

The E215B ... updated.

NEW Holland has introduced its enhanced B Series of excavators, following a two-year programme to update its entire range of crawler excavators (over 12 tonnes).

The programme was launched by the company in a bid to reduce the cost of ownership and increasing productivity. During this time, emission regulations obliged all manufacturers to equip their machines with up-to-date engines. The company, hence, seized the opportunity to select an engine that was low on fuel consumption.
Citing the popular E215B as a prime example of the enhancements embodied in the B series, the spokesman elaborates on how New Holland has achieved its objectives. “The E215B in the 20-tonne class has an advanced electronic processor (AEP) with a multi-functional monitor, which enables the operator to select and monitor all the main parameters, through maintenance notifications, self diagnosis and operating data storage. The operator just needs to select the working mode and the AEP pre-sets the hydraulic system to accomplish the job in the easiest and more productive way. The right choice of the working mode, according to the site conditions, can help the operator save time and money,” he says.
The four working modes are:
H: Engine running at maximum revolutions per minute (rpm), when maximum hydraulic power is required for maximum productivity;
S: Engine running at reduced rpm, for normal operations as economy mode for fuel saving;
B: For attachments, such as breakers, featuring a one-way auxiliary line; and
A: For attachments requiring a two-way auxiliary line. In this mode, double flow is activated.
New hydraulic functions enable oil flow to be selected in 10-litre steps and oil pressure in 10 bar steps. “The hydraulic system is the core of the machine, which can really make the difference,” the spokesman says, adding that “it has been redesigned in order to guarantee better performance.”
He continues: “The maximum flow is now increased in comparison with the previous model with a lower rpm. This feature, along with the same maximum pressure, grants higher performance. Also, the hydraulic system has been completely revised by our engineers who were able to minimise all internal losses in the system. All this, of course, increases performance and decrease consumption.
“Our engineering team also worked on the attachments. The boom and the dipper have been redesigned in order to have a better ‘material distribution’ on areas subjected to greater stress. That means more lifting capacity for the machine. Also, the kinematics have been revised in order to increase breakout forces. Another highlight is the continuous power boost – at a push of a button on the right joystick, the power will increase, enabling the machine to tackle critical performance requirements.”
Serviceability has also been improved to ensure quicker and easier service and routine maintenance. A new parallel layout for radiator, oil cooler and inter-cooler increases cooling efficiency and reduces maintenance costs, providing easier access from ground level as it is for the air conditioning filter, he says. Batteries are now repositioned in the same compartment as the radiator and coolers, leaving more space for tools. Boom maintenance is improved with a new centralised lubrication system enabling easy greasing of all points.
“Comfort of the operator is directly linked to a better utilisation of the machine as making the job easier means more productivity. Hence, we have focused on the cab, where new features include an easy single-handle opening system for the front screen; new foot pedal shape with more space between pedals and seat support; and new ergonomic positioning of all the controls, ensuring more comfort, easier operation and better controllability of the machine,” he says.
Italy-based New Holland brings together the 235 years of combined history and experience of Fiat Kobelco, Kobelco, O&K and New Holland Construction, supported by the ongoing commitment, drive and resources of CNH. “Thanks to our global alliance with our Japanese partner Kobelco, New Holland can guarantee customers a best-in-class crawler excavator that is up to date,” the spokesman adds.
New Holland will be well represented at the forthcoming Intermat trade fair, one of the most important international construction machinery exhibitions, scheduled to be held next month (April 20 to 25) in Paris, France.
