Brilliant Adventures’ stand at gulfBID proved to be a crowd-puller with its infinity candles and mirror-faced prismatic obelisk models featuring a kaleidoscope of patterns, creating quite a stir at the show.
These prismatic models – Kaleidospheres as they are called – could prove to be the basis of an ambitious Spirit of Peace Pavilion proposed for the region by Nick Moore, an English inventor, designer and cofounder of Brilliant Adventures, who aims to bring the message of peace to the region.
According to Moore, the concept of Spirit of Peace Pavilion drew praise from none other than Bahrain’s Prime Minister himself.
Moore is in discussions with the Prime Minister’s Court and the British embassy is liaising on the project, which has attracted potential funding from a local bank.
Through the Spirit of Peace Pavilion, Moore proposes to make Bahrain the hub of peace in the region and is inviting commercial partners to help push ahead with the project. The entire scheme will promote relaxation and is conducive to meditation, he says.
“The Kaleidosphere is a modern take on a kaleidoscope inspired from larger museum installations. Unlike a kaleidoscope, the Kaleidosphere gives an optical-illusion 3D effect of huge radiating spheres created through slits in the mirrors that let light in along the inside of the optical mirror walls and a crystal ball at the end condenses any colours and shapes in the environment when you point the Kaleidosphere around you,” he explains.
Elaborating on the proposed project, Moore says “The Spirit of Peace Pavilion, a 60-m-high prism, is to be powered entirely with renewable energy, and will as a beacon to the rest of the world that human beings can work with nature to ensure a sound future. We propose therefore, that this feature should take the visitor on a spectacular sensory journey through sound, light and space.
“This pavilion will provide an expression of the human spiritual experience in a way that side-steps traditional boundaries of nation, religion, race, age and focuses on the spiritual experience of the individual.”
Moore believes that the shape most suited for the spirit pavilion is a sphere used in conjunction with a spire. The function of the Spirit of Peace Pavilion would thus be to provide a powerful and spiritually uplifting experience that embraces the divinity of all religions.
“Upon entering the sphere at the base of the Spirit of Peace Pavilion, visitors are guided into the reception area where they will receive personal headsets to provide stereo narration and music. They can then take one of a series of lifts to the observation platform – located halfway up the inside of the sphere – suspended off the kaleidosphere/spire structure, a core feature off which all structural and multimedia equipment is mounted. Upon exiting the lift, the visitor will appear to look out into a seemingly infinite starscape accurately projected on to the inside of the surrounding sphere.
“Appropriate moving Imax-type images are projected on to the inside of the sphere providing a means of conveying the all-embracing spiritual ecological message of peace prepared in a carefully choreographed way.
“The apex of the prism is truncated and a large video projection screen is placed facing down into the structure. The screen forms a huge sphere of multi-replicating and changing reflected images floating high up in space which acts as a powerful central focus to the whole experience
“At predetermined intervals up the length of the internal faces of the Kaleidosphere, gaps are left between the mirrored surfaces to incorporate special lighting effects. Microprocessor-controlled high-powered multi-coloured light arrays are installed around the perimeter. This configuration creates the visual effect of large concentric geodesic spheres. The rings (say six) are linked to one another so that they created waves of pulsing spheres running up and down the prism.”
According to Moore, the building would be simple to construct as the main part of the construction is the central spire, which is a simple prefabricated steel frame. The spherical envelope would be made of a lightweight balloon-type material and will be kept inflated by maintaining a higher internal atmospheric pressure.
“The energy requirements for the pavilion are expected to be met by the combined use of renewable energy, wind, solar, geothermal and hydrogen with oxygen extracted efficiently from water which will make this building a truly spectacular and inspirational architectural feature,” he adds.
Brilliant Adventures is renowned for optical illusions using mirrors to create infinity and 3D effects in projects around the world. It has carried out major installations for museums such as the Natural History Museum in London and exhibitions for an international audience with clients including Pioneer Electronics, Greenpeace, Coca-Cola, DTI British Pavilion Seville, Port of Felixstowe Atlanta US, Discovery Channel, Madam Tussauds, Virgin Atlantic, Light Fantastic, Techniquest Cardiff, Milford Haven Science Centre and Ekamai Science Museum in Thailand, among others.
