GE Energy has signed a contract with the Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) for the expansion of the Ras Abu Fontas B-2 power plant.
This $500 million venture, to be developed by a consortium including GE and Fisia Italimpianti, is due for completion in 2007 and will help Qatar support future demands for power and water. The power plant will produce 597 MW of power and 30 million gallons of desalinated water per day.
The 22 GE gas turbines are driving five compression trains totaling 20.7 million tonnes of LNG production per year and also are providing electric power for the LNG complex. Installation of the units started in 1997 and will be completed by 2008. The gas turbines include ten GE 7001EA units, nine GE 6001B machines and three GE 5002D units.
