The kingdom will invest SR809 million ($215.7 million) in expanding its desalination facilities, according to the Water and Electricity Ministry.
The plan will see an increase in the output of four plants by 238 per cent to 598 per cent through raising the daily production capacity of three of them to 9 million litres each and that of a fourth to 18 million litres a day. It will also involve the construction of two new plants, Al Qunfida and Al Laith, both with a daily production capacity of nine million litres each. The expansion and construction will cost SR709 million while SR100 million will be spent on pipelines.
The kingdom has some 70 water desalination plants, but a large share of production is wasted because of poor piping.
