A section of the pipeline for Bahrain's Hidd water transmission system has been laid under the Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Highway using trenchless technology to avoid traffic disruption. The thrustbore is situated near the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre.
The project for the Ministry of Electricity and Water is being supervised by consultant Binnie & Partners (overseas). Specialist Saudi contractor Arabian Jacking Enterprises for Contracting and Trading Company is the nominated subcontractor.
A 65-m-long, 1,200-mm-diameter sleeve, was initially installed under the highway between two pits using microtunnelling and jacking techniques. The 800-mm-diameter ductile iron pipe to carry water to the Sanabis blending station was then pushed through this sleeve and supported inside it by timber blocks to avoid contact between the sleeve and the water pipe.
