At work ... waterproofing by Modern Home.

Modern Home Company was charged with keeping the water out of the sail-shaped Bahrain World Trade Center (BWTC), a task it embarked on in October 2004.

Under a BD250,000 ($662,014) deal, the waterproofing specialist has completed extensive waterproofing works which entailed applying two layers of SBS modified torch membrane to the 30,000 sq m basement area, in addition to carrying out the pile cap waterproofing and the installation of all the water bars of the project. It is currently engaged in waterproofing all the wet areas on each floor and has just started the podium waterproofing.
Modern Home has also carried out the roof waterproofing to the new Sheraton entrance and multistory car-park, as well as waterproofing works for all the water tanks at the BWTC, says Tariq Mahmoud, partner of the Bahrain-based firm.
“Due to the large footprint area of the building, and multiple crew working in different areas of the site, we had to protect our waterproofing works against damage from the contractor’s workforce on site,” he says. “In addition, ensuring strict quality control standards – given the delicate nature of basement waterproofing – was another challenge on account of the scale of the project. However, on completion of the basement waterproofing works, we have issued a 10-year guarantee as we are confident that the quality of material and workmanship of waterproofing works will hold well.”
“Whether we are involved in a multi-million-dollar project like the BWTC or a private villa, our dedication to quality control, professionalism and openness with our customers remains the same,” he adds.
Launched in 1981 as a family-owned business specialising in general contracting and materials supply, Modern Home Company has expanded to three offices in the GCC that include Modern Chemical Bahrain, Modern Chemicals Doha (Qatar), and New Horizons in Beirut (Lebanon).
The company recently inaugurated a large state-of-the-art warehouse in Bahrain and has two other warehouses in Doha in Qatar.
The company’s recent project portfolio in Bahrain includes waterproofing of projects such as Sheikh Isa Library, HSBC Bank, Phases II, III and IV of the US Naval Base and the Gulf Hotel and Serviced Apartments; the roof and wet areas of Almoayyed Tower; roof waterproofing of the Seef Mall extension; and waterproofing work at the Tubli sewerage plant.
Modern Home Company’s turnover has steadily increased over the past year with most of its profits being reinvested to buy or further upgrade machinery and equipment. The company has also increased its workforce by almost 50 per cent and purchased two new large lightweight concreting machines required for roofing jobs.
