
The tenders will be floated this month for the reclamation work of the New Doha International Airport (NDIA) in Qatar, said a senior Bechtel official.
Over 30 large contractors have expressed interest in submitting their bids.
“We are issuing documents and the interested parties can collect them from us,” said Sabah Barakat, vice president of Overseas Bechtel Inc.
The tender involves the reclamation of 50 to 60 million cu m of land and is expected to be completed in 18 months. “We expect to finalise the bidding and award the contract by October this year,” Barakat said.
Bechtel has been appointed the lead consultant for the three-phase development of the NDIA, the first phase of which will cost $2.5 billion. Bechtel’s contract includes the design, project management of the entire development covering a site of 2,200 hectares.
French airport development consultants Aeroports de Paris International (ADPI) have been appointed sub-consultants for the project. The consultants have finalised 19 construction packages for the first phase of the NDIA.
“Currently we are in the process of demolishing some of the existing structures and clearing the rest of it for the construction work. Other tenders for the rest of the construction packages will follow as the work progresses,” added Barakat.
